Shark Island Challenge Ben Player Wins S.I.C. 2008
The
The No. 6 Brett Young Trials The gateway to the Human
Cronulla Shark Island Challenge. Thr trials will be held between
June 27th – 29th Cronulla. NSW.
Trials will be hotly
contested…For the first time in the events history the Human Shark
Island Challenge will feature all of the elite IBA Top 16.
In
the past the waiting period has been a deterrent for
International competitors but 2008 will herald a new formula and a
shorter waiting period.
“ The waiting period has been trimmed
down to just 20 days” said IBA International General Manager Terry
McKenna.
“ This is less than half the time that the event has
had in the past but we are confident that this time of the year will
serve up some of the epic conditions that are required for
what is considered to be the best competition on the
planet”.
Local riders Dave Ballard and Christian Ricco have
secured the local wildcards and will not have to contest the
trials.
Sponsors wildcards include Big wave charger Chris
James (Nomad) and Newcastle’s Garth McGregor.(Emerald Surf
City. Still not official!)
Garth McGregor is enjoying a
massive comeback to the sport after almost a decade away from the
spotlight and is still regarded as one of the most powerful riders
in the world. McGregor has had several front covers in 2008
and has also secured a new sponsor and his own model. In his own
words he is “Stoked”
“I can’t wait mate. I have only surfed
the Island a few times but I love the joint. So stoked that I am
going to have a crack at the main event, it’s always been a dream”
said an elated McGregor.
With the top 16 and the four
wildcards straight into the main event ( July 1st – 20th ) the
Number 6 trials are expected to be stacked with
talent.
Riders from over 9 countries will be lining up
against the best in Australia. An expected field of around 130 will
contest the three-day event set down for June 27th – 29th at
Cronulla Point.

08/09 range.
Mattick has been
turning heads lately with some good style and showing up in almost
every new vid out lately. The Mattick model comes in both Dow and
Xpp core choices, the XPP core model has a two piece crescent tail,
single spring tip stringer and nose bulbs. The Dow core model has a
crescent tail single stringer and nose bulbs. The 08/09 4play
range is due out in June.

Pro!
The semi
finals left our remaining Aussies Ben Player and Michael Novy
in trouble due to some poor conditions, and had a bit of a
hard time racking up the points needed to take out the
competitors. Ben Player was beaten by Hugo Pinheiro and
Paulo Barcellos, while Novy finished fourth in his heat behind
Tamega, Hubb and Uri Valado.

ABOUT US
Emerald Surf City
first opened shop in 1978. The owner, Arnold Cohen was one
of the people behind the inception of the Cronulla
Bodyboarding Club (CBC), which was a breeding ground for some
of Australia's first professional bodyboarders.
Arnold sponsored and ran the club events. The shop
eventually evolved into a bodyboard specialist in the
early 80's, stocking a huge range of bodyboards and equipment.
After moving around the corner to a more exposed location, the
controls were handed over to Harry Bosworth, who took
Emerald to new heights with sponsorship of the Shark
Island Challenge (SIC) now the premier event on the world super
tour, all the while, keeping CBC going strong. Following
in the footsteps of the key role for support of
bodyboarders in South Sydney, is Des Govender. Dessie is a long
time local bodyboarder who knows his product and is willing to
talk you through anything you need to know about bodyboards or
any other products in store. Dessie has continued the
sponsorship commitments to the CBC which is as strong as
ever with a good head count and members as young as 9 years old.
We have tried to keep this site as simple as
possible, and don't want to hype up the product range like some. All
you really need to know is the important stuff that determines
the way your gear performs in the surf. Emerald stands
by it's principal to only stock products from
companies who support bodyboarding, by putting money back into the
sport through sponsorship of riders, clubs and comp events.
Supporting such companies creates growth within our sport.
Emerald may not have the largest range in Australia, that's
because we only stock serious equipment, and leave the pool toys
where they belong!
